Reminder – September 2016 Trail Night

FOMP is pleased to be holding our FINAL monthly volunteer trail work session for 2016!

[Note: We really need volunteers to come out even if it is only once per year. We need new faces to help us maintain our trails – have you been out enjoying the trails this year? Please consider spending at least one evening per year giving back so we can keep the trails open and in great shape! — Thanks!]

This is our last regular work session for 2016. Due to travel, late starts, etc please read carfully! Call if you have questions!

  • We are focused on cutting oak back Wednesday.
  • NOTE: Please cut all oak flush with the ground, no “pungi’s” (aka Scrub Oak short stumps) allowed. They are dangerous for everyone!
  • Tools will be in Jon’s old blue Ford parked at Red Rocks and MHR, parked there by 4:30 so anyone who can be early is encouraged to do so.
  • Grab trimming tools and Walk past the closed gate ~200 yards, enter the Preserve on the left. (MHR is temporarily closed but you can walk the short distance to the ridge entrance)
  • Priority is to finish trimming on Hotshot if you can get there in time. Jon will be there before 5:30 where we left off.
  • Alternative A: Trim South on Flow Dog: just walk through the closed gate on Mount Herman, head up 200 yards, go left into the preserve and an immediate right: trim on the trail that contours just below Mount Herman Road.
  • Alternative B: Trim down to the Pond as time allows.
  • Jon’s cell 719 640 1347. Text is better, call if needed. Chris is out with an injured knee.

FOMP and USFS provide all necessary tools. Volunteers should wear appropriate clothing for performing outdoor landscaping type of work. Volunteers should bring leather gloves, a personal water supply, eye protection, sunscreen, and bug repellent. We meet rain or shine unless there is lightning active in the area. In the event that you are joining us late we try to leave a note at the trailhead parking lot or you can call Jon Nordby (719.640.1347) or Chris Tirpak (719.439.8865) to find out where in the Preserve we are working.

We make every effort to accommodate volunteer preferences and abilities at each event. Generally, we perform activities such as water bar building or renovation, trail renovation, maintenance, and trimming, etc. So, pretty much everything from trimming back scrub oak or digging lots of dirt to moving boulders. We assign duties based on interest and capabilities. Kids are welcome to join their parents; however, we do ask that you evaluate whether this is an appropriate activity for your child or not.

Meet at the main trailhead parking lot at the corner of Mt. Herman Rd and Nursery Rd at 6:00PM! (map: http://bit.ly/FOMPMeetingSpot)

Thanks and we hope to see you out there!

FOMP needs you for this work session!
Wednesday, May 11 at 6:00 PM

After a long winter, we will kick off the 2016 FOMP season by performing seedling release – this involves cutting back scrub oak growth and removing any remaining root balls that are sticking up that could injure people, horses, or bikes.

We will also hold our monthly BOD meeting in the parking lot prior to the start of activities.

Hot Shot and Helitack Crew Appreciation Dinner + BOD Meeting

See below for April BOD Meeting details.

Every year FOMP holds a potluck dinner for the Hotshot and Helitack crews that are based right here with us in the Monument Preserve! (Helitack photos from the ’09 season are over at Flickr – these folks have a seriously cool job and what better home base than here in Monument?)

20090513-CBT_3212

This year it will be held next Wednesday April 20, at 5:30PM in the Fire Center Classroom building –  within the administrative area of the Preserve.

Both the Monument Hotshot Crew and the Monument Helitack crew will be there, so we expect ~30 very hungry young men and women + anyone else that attends. Everyone knows how hard they work helping fight fires right here in Colorado and across the country so we want to give them a big welcome back and remind them of our appreciation. In order to make it loud and clear FOMP needs volunteers to make food for this potluck and need the following:
  • Drinks
  • Main Dishes
  • Side Dishes/Salads
  • Desserts

If would like to help, please contact Diane Bandle at 719-494-8206 / dmbandle@hotmail.com.  If you would like to help but are unable to attend you can make arrangements to drop off your food in advance on Wednesday afternoon, or at the Fire Center Classroom between 4:30 and 5:30.

FOMP will also hold our monthly BOD meeting in conjunction with the dinner. BOD meetings are open to the public and all are welcome. Agenda is thin as we get ready for the summer work season:

Agenda:

  • Summer season 2016 planning
  • Finance update
  • Open forum for any discussion
    • scout projects?

Thanks in advance for your help!
